OPEN CHAMPION 2019 - THE ANSWER IS BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND
Dates: 18-21 July
Only 17 hours until Darren Clarke is the first to tee off in the 148th Open at Royal Portrush.
It’s remarkable that, in recent years, four Major winners are sons of the North and South of Ireland. Alongside Clarke is Graham McDowell, Rory McIlroy and my favourite – the amazingly intense Padraig Harrington.
Royal Portrush is an immaculate and testing golf course – hopefully the weather is dry, but with some wind, to produce a worthy Champion come Sunday night,
If the wind blows, both McDowell and Clarke are used to flighting the ball low, Surprisingly, McIlroy hits the highest shots on the PGA Tour and feels he doesn’t want to change his game plan for just one week in his season.
My “dark horse” is Padraig Harrington who showed a spark of form at the Irish Open two weeks ago. There is nobody, teeing it up next week who is more motivated than Padraig – his three Majors makes him believe that he is a contender.
So, I’ve shared my outside bet – how about the shorter odds? Rory, I believe will feed off the crowds, who will all feel he has a date with destiny. The most complete shot maker, in golf today, is the mighty Tiger Woods; whatever the conditions, barring ill health, he is my favourite.
Lastly, the greatest putter the world has ever seen, Jordan Spieth is my fourth and final pick. I’m not a gambling man, but don’t let me stop you having a modest flutter on Rory, Tiger, Jordan or Padraig to lift the Old Claret Jug
